Viele Spieler behaupten, Ivey sei der derzeit kompletteste Spieler, wenn man Fähigkeiten in allen verschiedenen Pokervariationen zusammenzählt.
Obwohl er eher schüchtern zu sein scheint, geht er seinen zahlreichen Fans nicht aus dem Weg und gibt gerne Autogramme.
Online spielt Ivey exklusiv bei Full Tilt Poker, dessen Team er auch angehört.
Ivey ist des weiteren auch ein regelmäßiger Gast im sogenannten „Big Game“ im Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, wo er auch wohnt.

Auch beim wohl größten Limit Texas Holdem Cashgame aller Zeiten ($50,000/$100,000) zwischen dem Bankier Andy Beal und der sogenannten Poker Corporation, einem Zusammenschluss verschiedener Pokerprofis, hat Ivey schon hohe Beträge gewinnen können.
Sein erstes Pokerturnier auf europäischem Boden spielte er bei der European Poker Tour im September 2006 in Barcelona, in dem er auch prompt den 2. Platz und 371,000 Euro mit nach Hause nehmen konnte.
